2018 Riverside AAA Rookie Ball Tournament Champs
Major Rookie Tier 1 Win Riverside AAA Major Rookie Invitational Tournament
The Waterloo Tigers Major Rookie Tier 1 traveled to Windsor this past weekend to compete in the Inaugural Riverside AAA Major Rookie Invitational Tournament. The tournament organizers wanted to put together a tournament with some of the strongest AAA Rookie Ball teams in the province and they did just that with a very competitive field of 8 teams.
The Tigers started off on Friday with a re-match vs. an East York team that had eliminated Waterloo from the Cambridge tournament in May in the semi-finals. A back and forth game ended 10-7 in favour of Waterloo after a late rally and exciting finish. In game two Waterloo brought their hitting shoes and beat Scarborough 17-4.
Saturday morning saw the end of the round robin with a game against a very competitive Burlington team. Waterloo came out on top 8-6 in an extremely well played game by both teams. Waterloo ended the round robin in first place in Group A with a 3-0 record and drew the 4th seeded LaSalle team from Group B in the quarter finals. This game was close until Waterloo broke it open mid way through the game and cruised to a 14-3 victory. This set up a semi final match up with the host Riverside Royals. Waterloo jumped out early to an 8-0 lead but this scrappy Riverside team never gave up and battled back to close the gap to 12=11 heading to the 7th inning. 2 late insurance runs sealed a 14-11 hard fought victory for the Tigers.
After a long day on Saturday the boys matched up with the defending OBA AAA Champion North York Blues in the final on Sunday. Trailing 2-1 in the 4th inning, Waterloo put up a huge 7 run inning to take an 8-2 lead. Some sparkling defense all over the field helped keep this high powered North York team at bay and the Tigers withstood a late Blues rally to secure an 8-4 victory claiming the title.
A perfect 6-0 weekend against some of the best AAA teams in the province is a great accomplishment for the team and they couldn’t have done it without the tremendous support of their fans who made the trip south to cheer on their Tigers.
The Tigers return to ICBA play with this great experience under their belt as they continue to get better each time they take the field.
